Release Notes

NCSA Mosaic v2.1 for Microsoft Windows ™

Welcome! NCSA Mosaic version 2.1 was released on March 8, 1996. NCSA Mosaic is a World Wide Web browser and a Win32 application. NCSA Mosaic is capable of running under the Windows 95 and Windows NT and the Windows 3.1x operating systems. Windows 95 and Windows NT are 32-bit operating systems that are designed to run Win32 applications. Windows 3.1x and Windows for Workgroups(WfW) 3.1x are 16-bit operating systems that need a subsystem called Win32s installed before Win32 applications will run under Win3.1x or WfW 3.1x

This latest release adds a few new features such as the Kodak Photo CD technology and client side image maps. We've also addressed bugs. The biggest most annoying bugs being network connectivity under 16-bit winsocks and a bug in Mosaic OLE CCI. Our latest release also represents a compilier upgrade. We went form Microsoft's VC++ 2.2 to VC++ 4.0. A major step in the right direction. With VC++ 4.0 we're once again working to build releases for Windows NT under MIPS and the Power PC. Unfortunately our alpha platform was recalled by DEC and we don't have a machine to compile a DEC aXP version. If the DEC aXP community wants NCSA Mosaic for Windows NT, we need a DEC aXP with Windows NT to compile a release. This MIPS compile is available, the PPC compile will be released as soon as we debug the jpeg library.

NCSA Mosaic has always been and will always be a freely available World Wide Web browser. NCSA Mosaic is freely available for individual, academic, United States Government, and internal business use. NCSA Mosaic is copyright by the University of Illinios and can not be commercially distributed with out a license.

NOTE: The Kodak Photo CD Technology is only available for the Intel(95, NT, 3.1x) versions of NCSA Mosaic.

We hope you enjoy this latest release of NCSA Mosaic. Version 2.2 is just around the corner and offers many new features. ;^)

Win32s Update Information

What is Win32s?

Win32s is a subsystem created by Microsoft for the Win 3.1x and WfW 3.1x 16-bit operating systems. The Win32s libraries allow Win3.1x and WfW 3.1x users to run Win32 (32-bit) applications on their 16-bit operating systems. Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) allows Mosaic to use its Client Communication Interface (CCI) to communicate with other applications.

Windows NT Users and Window 95 Users

Windows NT and Win95 users don't need Win32s. These operating systems are 32-bit operating systems with OLE support built-in. Do not install Win32s!

Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups Users

The Latest Release of Win32s is: Win32s with OLE, version 1.30a

Win32s v1.30a is available in the /Mosaic/Windows/Win31x/Win32s directory. We recommend all Windows 3.1x users upgrade to this latest version. If you are not sure which version of Win32s you have on your system, the version number can be found in the /windows/system/win32s.ini file. If your version is earlier than 1.30.166 you should upgrade.
